SECOND GRADE WEIGHING IN ON MATH
submitted by Miss Jeanette Siminski

Before Miss Jeanette's second graders were able to carve their class pumpkin, they had to do some math first.  But, it didn't seem like math ... it was FUN!  With a little help from 12 lbs. of birdseed, each student and few staff members estimated what they thought the pumpkin weighed.  It was so-o-o heavy that the children had to sit down to hold it!  Then they had to guess it circumference which was a little tricky.  Next, the pumpkin got the "royal treatment" by being rolled down to Nurse Leishora's office to officially get weighed.  Everyone was surprised to find out it weighed 31 lbs.!  No wonder it was so difficult to lift!  (Congratulations to both Mr. Van Sciver and Mrs. Zaczek as they guessed the exact weight!)

Then the fun continued.  Each child was able to scoop, separate the seeds from the pulp and then carve a cute cat's face, courtesy of Mr. Corra.  Since the class was working on tens in math, the students grouped the seeds into tens to count them. They were surprised to find out the pumpkin contained 741 seeds!  The class all agreed they had a great time!
